PIANO SOLOS

BLACK CUBICALS  for Piano from Dimensions in Color. Now published in Blue Ribbon Encyclopedia, Favorite Piano Solos, Level Three.

"Black Cubicals" is an enticing piano solo marked bold and spirited.  It is a dry, humorous piece with lots of character.  The atonal qualities combined with melodic and harmonic fourths, create an illusion of quadrangular shapes. Pianists will enjoy playing the percussive accents that rhythmically drives the piece forward.

DIMENSIONS IN COLOR, a Set of Two Pieces, "Black Cubicals" and "Purple Zigzags"  was originally published by Schmitt Music Centers.  Because of publisher negotiations,  the set was soon transfered to Belwin Mills who later published a different format of the two pieces.  The image pictured above was the original cover to the first publication. The second piece, "Purple Zigzags," is now published in IMAGES Volume 3.

To expand a little about "Purple Zizags".      This composition   uses "extended range" with wide leaps and skips. The piece has a tonal center on E.  The dissonances are created by the use of major 2nds.   Although "Black Cubicals"  and "Purple Zigzags" stand alone on each of it's own merits, the pieces are most effective when performed as a pair.  There is a  palette of the 20th Century used throughout the music as well as total use of freedom in both pieces.

PIANO SOLO

LADY ASHLEY'S PLIGHT (LONDON BRIDGE) from Folk Tune Novelettes Volume I.   Published in Performance Plus, Folk Fun, Book 3.

COLLECTION

FOLK TUNE NOVELETTES,Volumes I and II, Adaptations for Piano

Twelve bright and humourous adaptations of favorite folk songs arranged to delight the young and old alike.  Each folk song arrangment has been given a new title with new sounds. "Old MacDonald" becomes "Docile Menagerie"  and "Are You Sleeping" becomes "Lethargic Jacque". The arrangements are carefully planned so that the melody remains clear throughout the piece. (POP)
