PUBLISHED WORKS WILLIS MUSIC COMPANY
<8> COLLECTION GALLERY OF SOUND PATTERNS "Gallery of Sound Patterns" are original piano solos published as a series that includes a collection in
a book and single sheet music. The selections employ the use of 20th Century compositional devices such as tone clusters,
modes, exotic scale structures, tone colors, prepared piano and special effects. The pieces may be played with or without
special effects. A page of performance notes prefaces each selection with analytical notes and instructions for optional
special effects. The series will stimulate imaginations and creativity as well as introduce the pianist to the history
of early 20th Century avantgarde literature. PIANO
SOLOS: THE MAGICIAN "This programmatic piece calls for the performer to create drastic, eerie sounds and moods through traditional
and non-traditional means. Rosco effectively combines techniques such as plucking the strings inside the piano while
playing tone clusters, sustained chords and melodies at the keyboard. The result is a work that conjures up the title
character, a black caped master of illusion, tension and drama. Helpful performance notes by the composer are included."
Kendall Feeney, Clavier Magazine. MAI (Dance) for Prepared
Piano "Mai", (pronounced "my") is
a Japanese word used to describe all forms of dance. Musicians playing various instruments such as a "Fue (flute),
a "Shakuhachi" (similar to a recorder) and a drum accompany some of the most elegant dances. The drum,
placed upright or on it's side, is tapped on the rim with one or two wooden sticks. Usually, several dancers participate and
choregraph their movements to create a story. A talented pianist will enjoy the oriental sound of "Mai" with
muted strings imitating the sound of a drum. The piece employs the use of asymmetric rhythms and contrasting melodies
that build into a climax before ending with a drum solo fading away. TEMPESTUOUS SEA "Tempestuous Sea,"
depicts the changing panorama of calmness, majestic beauty and violence of the sea. The six page piano solo demands
a sense of space, nuance, expansion and drama. Adding an accompaniment using a sound recording or synthesizer may create
optional special effects. Performers will enjoy immersing themselves in the unfolding sounds and textures of this effective
work.
